What to
wear.

Stretchy clothes, fitted tops, no jewellery. The simple outfit guide for indoor climbing — plus what to leave at home.

Indoor climbing has a remarkably forgiving dress code. You do not need specialist clothing for your first session — anything stretchy and comfortable works. But a few clothing choices are actively counterproductive (or outright dangerous), so here is a quick guide.

This page covers indoor climbing specifically. For outdoor climbing clothing (where seasonal layering, sun protection, and rough rock add complications), see our broader rock climbing clothing guide.

01 · Wear

What to wear

Stretchy trousers, leggings, or shorts

High steps, drop knees, deep stems — climbing needs full hip range. Anything restrictive will frustrate you on the wall.

Fitted t-shirt, vest, or tank

Loose tops bunch under harnesses and snag on holds when you reach overhead. Athletic-cut tops stay out of the way.

Sports bra (women)

High-impact support — climbing involves dynamic falls, leaps, and sudden braces. Racerback styles work best with harnesses.

Comfortable underwear

You will be doing a lot of high-stepping and bending. Avoid anything that bunches uncomfortably.

02 · Skip

Leave at home

× Jeans or rigid trousers

No stretch. Every move that needs a 60+ degree knee bend will feel restrictive.

× Loose dresses or skirts

A harness needs to sit on the hips with no fabric bunching. Same problem with billowy tops on the wall.

× Rings, watches, bracelets

Rings can cause "ring avulsion" — a serious injury where the ring catches on a hold and degloves the finger. Take all jewellery off before climbing.

× Heavy makeup or strong fragrance

Sweat + chalk dust + strong scents are unpleasant for everyone in an enclosed gym.

× White trainers / shoes

Approach shoes and chalk dust eat sneakers fast. Wear something you do not mind getting dusty.

03 · Year-round

Same outfit, every season

Indoor gyms are climate-controlled at 18-22°C year-round

No need for seasonal layering once inside. The same outfit works in January and July.

Bring an extra layer for arrival/departure

Especially in winter — you will be sweaty after a session, and a fresh dry layer for the trip home is appreciated.

Hot weather inside the gym

Some gyms run warm during peak hours (lots of climbers + chalk dust + bouldering = humid). Lightweight breathable tops help.

The rules

Three rules

  1. 1 Stretch over style. Anything that restricts hip range will frustrate you.
  2. 2 Fitted over loose. Loose fabric snags on holds, bunches under harnesses, and gets in the way.
  3. 3 No jewellery. Especially rings — ring avulsion is a real and serious injury.
